Lukas 7:32

7:32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another, ¹ 

‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; ² 

we wailed in mourning, ³  yet you did not weep.’

9:42 As ⁴  the boy ⁵  was approaching, the demon threw him to the ground ⁶  and shook him with convulsions. ⁷  But Jesus rebuked ⁸  the unclean ⁹  spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

[7:32]  ² sn ‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance…’ The children of this generation were making the complaint (see vv. 33-34) that others were not playing the game according to the way they played the music. John and Jesus did not follow “their tune.” Jesus’ complaint was that this generation wanted things their way, not God’s.

[7:32]  ³ tn The verb ἐθρηνήσαμεν (eqrhnhsamen) refers to the loud wailing and lamenting used to mourn the dead in public in 1st century Jewish culture.

[9:42]  ⁴ tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[9:42]  ⁵ tn Grk “he”; the referent (the boy) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:42]  ⁶ sn At this point the boy was thrown down in another convulsion by the demon. See L&N 23.168.

[9:42]  ⁷ tn See L&N 23.167-68, where the second verb συσπαράσσω (susparassw) is taken to mean the violent shaking associated with the convulsions, thus the translation here “and shook him with convulsions.”
